About Tom O’Connell - Attorney at Law

Tom O’Connell is an experienced criminal defense attorney with more than a decade of experience representing individuals and corporations before the State and Federal Courts. Tom O’Connell has participated in more than 200 trials (75 Non-Jury, 180 Jury) as Lead Counsel, and certified/qualified by the Florida Supreme Court to represent Indigent Defendants accused of First Degree Murder. As a former Broward County Assistant Public Defender from 1991 to 1995, Tom O’Connell gained the valuable experience necessary to handle cases ranging from Driving on Suspended License charges, Drug Cases, Domestic Violence Charges, and Complex Capital (First Degree Murder) Cases.

Tom O’Connell began representing Clients as a “private practitioner” starting in July of 1995. He has tried more than 12 First Degree Murder (Capital) cases, and has represented numerous clients charged with complex White Collar Criminal charges, including: Violations of the Medicare/Medicaid statutes, Insurance Violations, Racketeering (RICO) cases, Commodity Futures Trading Commission Cases, Securities Fraud Cases, and various complex (multiple Co-Defendant) Drug Trafficking cases.

Tom O’Connell was recognized for his excellent trial skills by his colleagues within the Broward County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (BACDL). He won the coveted “Hat Trick” award for the year 2001 and 2005 for winning acquittals in at least three (3) consecutive (back-to-back) Felony Jury Trials. Tom O’Connell continues to serve the community by voluteering for various civic and volunteer organizations. He was honored by the Broward County Young Democrats as “Young Democrat of the Year” in 1995 for his work as President of the Broward County Young Democrats.

Tom O’Connell has also volunteered as a”Voting Rights Counsel” during the 2004 Presidential / Congressional elections. Tom O’Connell is licensed to practice law within the County, Circuit, and appellate courts within the State of Florida, the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, and the United State Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, Atlanta, Georgia.

Tom O’Connell was born and raised in South Florida. Tom O’Connell earned his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration (1987) from Florida Atlantic University, and earned his Juris Doctor Degree from Nova Law School (1991).

Political Consulting and Government Representation

Tom O’Connell has many years experience as CAMPAIGN COUNSEL to numerous political organizations and campaigns, including local candidates for Broward County Sheriff, County Commission, candidates for Mayor, City Commission, and has been hired by the Clerk of the Court, Broward County, to handle various legal matters.

Tom O’Connell was Co-Lead Counsel, Obama for Change/Florida Democratic Voting Rights Council. Tom served as  Early Voting rights Chairman, Broward County, Florida. He worked with a group of attorney’s who were responsible for the supervision of over 300 Early Voting Rights Counsel, and 350 Election Day Attorneys on November 4, 2008.

He also served as Voting Rights Counsel in 2004 and 2006.
